The Ringling and Moxie Productions SRQ Presents :

the HoNGs // Miami, Florida // Formed in 2008 by Jamaican-born musician Gordon Myers this multinational rock electronic group has become one of the most popular bands of the Miami music scene.
Quite accidentally, The Hongs band members are a multinational fusion: Jamaican, French, Mexican, Jewish, Costa Rican, Scottish, Cuban & Argentinean. The Hongs blend elements of electro-pop with a dash of nuwave to create a sweet sugary pop-rock-disco. Spreading the dance / rock / house / electro hybrid one toe at a time…

Lady Dug // St Augustine, Florida // Multi-instrumentalist & cosmic jazz-head Amy Douglas (aka Lady Dug) is giant-stepping out with her debut LP. She wears her influences on her sequined sleeve, paying homage to early 90s hip hop, r&b and deep soul. While she attempts these advanced arkestral maneuvers, her introspective lyrics keep firmly grounded & offer a glimpse into the depths of Dug hidden beneath her glittery exterior.

Aūto Kania // Sarasota, Florida // Auto Kania is a newly founded original psychedelic rock trio led by Hungarian guitarist/vocalist Thomas Nagy & backed up by a powerful rhythm crew consisting of bassist Jack Berry & drummer Jared Johnson. Their heavy atmospheric sound takes influence from 60s & 70s stalwarts while incorporating hints of European folklore and jazz in an abstractly modern style.

Art in the Courtyard at Ringling Underground:
The Ringling and Danielle Dygert presents:

“Unraveled,” a Ringling Museum Courtyard exhibition of three local artists who examine the physical representation of emotions. Including poetics of space, hyper-realized imagery, and confrontational design.

Ava Zelkowitz is an artist and writer who mergers the poetics of text with installation. Her work evokes latent emotional states and reactions as signs, to be confronted as disruptions of environment.

Sarah Grace Bradicich is a print-maker, painter, and textiles artist exploring ideas and issues of femininity through a historical and anthropological perspective. Her work is clean, crisp and hyper feminine. Her explorations of the female body through sugar-coated contraceptives demonstrates a keen eye for both design and play.

Briana Nieves is a religious studies major who utilizes photography and film-making to identify the significance of both the mother and the eroticism in contemporary catholicism. Working with women of color, Bree stretches the aesthetic of tradition.

___________+Ringling Underground UNPLUGGED_____________

Spoken word artist Cedric Hameed will explore the ideas presented in the special exhibition highlighting contemporary artist Hank Willis Thomas. The exhibition, Unbranded: A Century of White Women, 1915–2015, features digital chromogenic prints reconsidering classic advertisements over the last 100 years – minus their original text. Released from any context, brand, product or messaging, the previously subliminal images are free to speak more directly to what is being sold: the constructed identity and reinforced stereotypes of white women in the U.S. over time. A Century of White Women examines how advertising has helped construct gender ideals over the last 100 years. It is also takes a deeper look at the whitewashing of beauty standards and the idea that female beauty means white female beauty. https://www.ringling.org/events/hank-willis-thomas-brandedunbranded

Cedric, together with musician Sierra Sellers, will create a fusion of art forms with the aim to connect the audience to art while exploring contemporary and social issues. In this positive space, all are welcome to share your opinions and emotions about the complex themes Thomas explores.

Working in tandem with this performance, artwork created by staff and students of the Visible Men Academy will also be on view via a projection screen. The pieces shown touch on themes of self-image, self-esteem, and the challenging of stereotypes

ESS SEE // BROOKLYN // Indie / electro pop singer and songwriter ESS SEE hails from Arkansas, she now resides in Brooklyn where she crafts intoxicating melodies from her bedroom studio. Her sultry, vibey brand of pop has been described as “BANKS raised on Nirvana or Sonic Youth.” With an impressive range of vocals and bold lyrics exploring themes of intimacy, individuality, and youth culture, ESS SEE is a breath of fresh air—both onstage and off.

Mountain Holler // ST PETE // “Mountain Holler” is the moniker of multi-Instrumentalist Mark Etherington. Along with playing drums in the national touring instrumental band Set and Setting, and fronting the psychedelic-folk/groove outfit Redfeather, ‘Mountain Holler’ emerged in the spring of 2011 when Etherington started playing shows solo. His melodic guitar playing and haunting singing style reflective of Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, Robin Pecknold, Jim James, Jose Gonzalez, Neil Young and Stephen Stills.

Astralis // SRQ // Strewn together with stylistic stardust from across the musical universe, Sarasota five-piece Astralis layers incandescent vocals atop funky bass lines, cosmic synths, moonlit guitar riffs, and intricate percussion.

The Ringling and SRQ Arts Presenters Presents:

Polyenso // Florida //
Building off of 2013’s cult-acclaimed “One Big Particular Loop,” Polyenso — Alex Schultz, Brennan Taulbee, and Denny Agosto — has spent the past two years working extensively with producer Jason Pennock. Evolving their particular flavor of indie-rock to include elements of hip-hop, neo-soul, and experimental electronics, they pull influences from acts such as Flying Lotus, The Roots, Bright Eyes, and Bjork, half-jokingly referring to their medley as “urban indie progressive.”

Possessing an unrestricted vision for the musical quality in all things, the band operates like sound designers, pairing synthesizers, pianos and guitars with organic noise and everyday objects like spatulas, wooden bowls and packing peanuts. Polyenso’s visionary production is equaled by the freshly unlocked vocal dynamics of Taulbee and Schultz. Led by Taulbee’s soothing and provocative melodies, Schultz is tagged in to bring the sexy back on harmonies, occasionally leading himself.

Releasing their first new tracks in 2014, “17 New Years” and “Moona Festival” provide listeners with a taste of the depth and scope of the band’s ever-expanding sound. A new album ready for a 2015 release, Polyenso serves as a challenge to music as a whole, proving that there is room left for originality in the popular. Carrying forward their intrinsically spiritualistic character, from start to finish, their music captures listeners in a moment of transcendence, feeling as much a part of the future as it does the present.

Brother Brother //SRQ //
A new generation indie folk. The energy of the sibling duo brings light to today’s roots music revival. Singer songwriters Bradley and Brett Anderson have original harmonies and songs ranging from foot-stomping Mumford-like melodies to indie rock beats and distortion featured on acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, mandolin, and a slamming bass drum.

Physical Plant // SRQ //
Physical Plant is a collaborative rock project from SRQ that serves up high-energy indie psych with nary a dreamy synth in sight. Caegan Quimby’s garage-prog tangles with Josh Scheible’s soul fusion over the assertive and intricate rhythm stylings of David Baker (bass) and Ryan McCarthy (drums). Their two EP’s, Are They Dangerous? and Wisdom Tooth are available for streaming or free download at physicalplant.bandcamp.com

“Sarasota four-piece [Physical Plant] writes and performs an intriguing brand of psychedelic rock that melds freak-outs with more focused indie rock, creating sounds that are familiar and fresh, trippy and propulsive.” Wade Tatangelo, The Ticket Sarasota

“Physical Plant performed an electrifying set that overflowed with melodious, four-part vocal harmonies, galvanizing guitar solos, heaving bass lines, compelling keyboards and thunderous drums that had feet shuffling and heads nodding across the venue until the performance came to a deliberately abrupt conclusion that had many in the audience catching their breath.” -Tyler Whitson, This Week in Sarasota

Firstworld (MIA)
🌴 miami chillwaves 🌴
Firstworld is the moniker for South Florida artist/producer Kris Alvarez. Firstworld began as an outlet for Alvarez to write darker, more lofi songs than what he was producing for his band at the time Sigh Kicks. After Sigh Kicks split, Firstworld became Alvarez’s main project. Firstworld’s debut self-titled single has been featured on indie music blogs such as BIRP.FM and Indie Shuffle, as well as on Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist. Firstworld’s sound is likened to chillwave, reminiscent of early Washed Out and Toro y Moi.

FR33DBACK (TPA)
Is an electronic musician and composer from Tampa, Florida who has spent the past 15 years studying the art of analog synthesis. He has toured the country as the digital half of the power pop band, Select Start, all the while continuing to develop his own unique style of glitchy, downtempo ambient house.

Roadkill Ghost Choir
FALSE YOUTH ETCETERA – VOL. 1+2

It’s been two years since Roadkill Ghost Choir has taken listeners on a ride. Last trip, Andrew Shepard (Vocals / Guitar), Zach Shepard (Bass), Maxx Shepard (Drums / Vocals), Stephen Garza (Guitar), and Kiffy Myers (Pedal Steel) packed the car, pedal to the metal, with a banjo, guitars, and the profound swelter of the South. With the upcoming arrival of False Youth Etcetera, the quintet outgrows their roots in a supersonic fashion – exchanging their known
vehicles for an electrified, aspirational magic carpet ride that soars through the night sky versus the tireless trudge of clocking mileage on an odometer. Coming off of a handful of challenging times, Andrew in particular was a bit hardened by his experiences on the road under pressure to deliver new songs. It’s no surprise False Youth Etcetera feels like a turn towards fantastical
and anthemic escape compared to songs from the past. It’s immediately felt on the band’s first single, “Classics (Die Young),” which bends beautifully and purposefully in the direction of M83 than the group’s previous resonance to contemporary folk, based mainly in their choice of instruments to begin with. “Going into [the band’s first major release] In Tongues, I was terrified
because I had never written under such a pressured amount of time, and I had struggled with writer’s block for a good portion of that time. After the record was completed, I had my first full-on panic attack on tour in Houston during one of the worst tours we’ve ever been on,” notes Shepard. “The sandwich I was eating [before a gig] started to fall apart, and it felt symbolic of my current state. I immediately left the awful restaurant and found myself aimlessly walking around an unfamiliar city, feeling I had hit a wall both in my personal life and creatively within the band. That was a major seed for the record – the dread that informs life being in a band.”
Shepard was able to afford a more comfortable and inherently inspirational environment where his body of work for the band could flourish, and where he could feel closer to himself. He explains, “It ended up being the first time I didn’t have a timeline, so I went right back to that – me sitting and recording, getting ideas down, and navigating what I really wanted to do sonically
and lyrically. False Youth Etcetera is more textural, more synths, more interesting.” Shepard is pointed in the departure from their familiar sounds, confirming “there is no banjo” on False Youth Etcetera. Instead, the new set of songs is “sonically, what I always wanted to do. I got to sit in my room in my underwear and play on synthesizers all day long figuring stuff out. We learned a lot more in the studio than ever before recording as a band, figure things out, and fully
realize what we were going through.” This notion also shines through in the songwriting of False Youth Etcetera, the strength of which Shepard credits to his ability to “go through all [his] petty shit, sadness, take a deep dive, face it, reconcile it, and at the end, realize it’s not that bad.”
This desire to explore new musical terrain was only bolstered by Shepard’s adoration for similarly sonic explorations that feel like transport and transformation – felt in roots of influence like The War On Drugs, and Shepard’s longtime desire to “make a record that sounded like Springsteen if Neu! was his backing band. I think I listened to nothing but Springsteen for about a year… Songs like ‘Tougher than the Rest’ informed how I wanted to approach the record
sonically. The great 80’s synths, and big drums, huge and covered in reverb. I’m drawn to it for some reason and I have no idea why.” This refreshed perspective and palette of inspiration, combined with the “comfort” and “centrality” of a new home base in the richly musical town of
Athens, Georgia positions Roadkill Ghost Choir to brighten many corners as False Youth Etcetera unfurls to an audience waiting to sit shotgun wherever the path guides them next.
The album is a drive that picks up an impassioned pace – starting with the extended, hazy dream sequence of “Vision on Vision (Undo)” that will make Roadkill Ghost Choir faithfuls feel right at home; picking up the pace on the majorly pulsating “Dream Shiver;” later careening into the stunning peak of a starry, Kraftwerk-inspired, and multilayered journey called “Panik Kit.” The back half of False Youth Etcetera is masterful aural poetry – from the soaring liberation of “Sad Magic,” the impassioned yearning of “Suit Said Sing,” to the lilted, sweet conclusion, “Out of Existence,” so clearly and beautifully delivering the group to a whole new illuminating, electric terrain.

DEA & SAINT (Saint Petersburg, FL)
Unique counterparts fusing raw talent with unprecedented energy. Hip-Hop, Soul, Hardcore, and Punk elements effortlessly combining in perfect synergy.

Pathos, Pathos (Orlando, FL)
It’s in circuses and festivals where every view that greets the eye is spectacular and alluring. Abnormality is celebrated and human dilemma, outside the fair gates, becomes an afterthought. Beneath these carnival lights, Pathos, Pathos is the search for euphoria along a path obscured by obsession, longing, and doubt.

The Ringling and SRQ Arts Presenters Presents :

Walker Lukens (Austin, TX)
The Never Understood EP was written in Austin, Texas throughout 2015, mostly in my garage (honorable mention to my living room). Without my iPhone Voice Memo app, lots of performing around the country to half empty rooms, the Nick Cave ACL taping, Adderall, Tecate, and The Savage Detectives, none of these songs would have come about.

Jim Eno produced and recorded these songs at his studio, Public Hi Fi. I met Jim at a bar (Austin! what a town!) and now we’ve recorded an entire album’s worth of songs (and then some!). The plan had been to Beyonce-drop a double album some time in the next 13 years and call it Chinese Democracy Revisited or Chinese Democracy II. But, frankly, my hair isn’t that red nor can my bank account handle so much anticipation. Hence, the Never Understood EP.

The songs were performed and arranged by my favorite band of sweet and tender hooligans, The Side Arms (We’ll be touring for infinity so be on the look out!). I take some pride in the fact that I got Eno to play keyboards on the song ‘Never Understood’ since he’s a drummer.

I hope when people listen to this record they think, ‘damn, this guy is hungry. He sounds like he’s been fasting for months, meditating on his songs. He’s somewhere passed hangry. He could use a steak. He’s pumping and thumping in time. The green light flashes, the flags go up. Churning and burning, he yearn for the cup.’ I hope that you people put our tour dates on your Gcal cos I need to pay my band and Jim.

With Love & Squalor,
Walker

Someday River (Orlando) is an experimental folk rock project and art platform envisioned by Greyson Charnock in Spring of 2015. Incorporating sweeping drum patterns and funk bass over songs rooted in folk, the band crystallizes into their full sound. From the Salty Coasts to the Swampy Center of Florida, Someday River draws their inspiration; weaving compositions, and painting sound-scenes with a likeness to the ebb and flow of the inevitable tides. Using texture and dynamic the band brings you along with them on an experiential journey through their live performance.

BLONK (SRQ/Orlando)
A three piece postmodern rock band playing original music out of Orlando Florida. The band was formed in the summer of 2014 by Dr. Robert Zuclich on drums, Tim on bass, and Vladimir Dragonheart Rachmoninov on guitar and vocals. The music is an amalgam of many different genres held together with tight twisting rhythms and dark quirky fun lyrics. BLONK’s first album is available to listen to on blonkband.com and you can like and follow facebook.com/blonkband.

Art in the Courtyard at Ringling Underground: ‘Action in the Manicure: Works by Nail Pop LLC & Porn Nail$’
Ringling Underground event and artist liaison Sarah Viviana Valdez will present artworks in the Courtyard: ‘Action in the Manicure: Works by Nail Pop LLC & Porn Nail$’, a Ringling Museum Courtyard exhibition of two regional visual artists who bridge conceptual nail art with feminism. Rosemarie Romero is the founder of Porn Nail$ Salon, an interactive installation and performance project that functions as a mobile queer-feminist nail salon. This ongoing mobile nail salon brings materiality to the environment to include a diverse audience. These performances create social encounters and cultural exchanges that address race, gender, class, sexuality and women’s work. Also working in a similar realm with nail art aesthetics is Erin Hart, founder of Nail Pop LLC, a radical nail art company that focuses on providing a platform for local artists by collaborating with them on new nail products. Erin’s ongoing collaborations have taken form of curation where they invite local artists to design visuals that are distributed as nail decals and dust masks. Together these two artists will invade the Courtyard with hyper feminine kitsch and super cutesy aesthetics such as Care Bears, rose garlands, pink flamingo’s, bright colors…etc. Also included will be a variety of nail sets extending their latest nail art techniques and a collaboration performance with Porn Nail$ Salon.

The Ringling and SRQ Arts Presenters Presents :

Hank & Cupcakes ( NYC/ Tel Aviv)

Hank & Cupcakes are Aliens of Extraordinary Ability… At least according to the US immigration services. Hailing from Tel Aviv to New York City in late 08’, the duo, consisting of powerhouse vocalist/drummer Cupcakes and bassist extraordinaire Hank were quickly dubbed a “must see” live act on the local scene. Attracting praise from MTV and New York Post, the buzzworthy band were signed to BMG with whom they released their 2012 ‘Aint No Love’ EP. When faced with the choice of creative compromise vs. artistic freedom, Hank & Cupcakes chose the latter, walking away from the deal to self release their debut LP ‘Naked’ in 2013, followed by ‘Cash 4 Gold’ in 2014. The two are known for their explosive live performance which has finally met it’s match in the form of the band’s forthcoming record, Cheap Thrill.

The Jackettes ( Saint Petersburg, Florida)
They are not so much a band as they are an attempt to give form to the passion felt for the music that we have come to know and love in our human existence. Like a child trying on their father’s too-big suit and tie or a group of toddlers shoulder-stacked under a baggy trench coat– we are youthfully attempting to carry the glimmering torch of our musical ancestors. This is an effort to give the world her next “classic sound.” We love it all: from the tender ballads of the Great American Songbook, to the unpredictable antics of a swinging 70’s r&b diva mythical and real….and we feel a strong obligation and connection to those of the yester-world to make music with those same characteristics. A sound that transcends being accepted and understood. We are humans struggling under the weight of living and dying. We are made by a great creator trying to be as creative. So it goes. The music we create embodies the out of touch, out of sync, misunderstood hysterical breakdown of simply living- to unite us.

Spark Notes (SRQ, Fl)
In a performing arts high school in Sarasota, FL, a french class assignment led to a one-off performance of Louise Attaque’s ‘J’t’ emméne au vent’ by Gene Hodsdon and Alfonso Murillo, later to become the founding members of the Spark Notes…

Eventually college, women and life drew them in separate directions, but music brought them back together several years later. Struggling to find their sound, the diverse population of the Tampa Bay Area eventually inspired their musical direction; they decided their sound would have a mass appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

From the driving punk rhythms of ‘Undone’ to the simple acoustic strums of ‘Florida Keys’, Spark Notes’ music is a nod in the direction of their influences; soft songs and loud tunes with a modern rock foundation.

Their 2nd independent EP release entitled ‘Focus’ is currently in the works AND is slated to be released in Spring 2017. Stay tuned…

Sigh Kicks (MIA)
If there ever was an embodiment of the philosophy of “dale” (beside Pitbull), these guys would be it. Comprising vocalist/guitarist Kris Alvarez, bassists Jean “Doodles” Dominguez, drummer Matthew “Cougar” Borroto, and synth player/guitarist Sebastian “Sebs” Hidalgo, all these guys want to do is get you to the dance floor with their retro tropical indie vibes. Given this band’s overflowing talent and the opportunities they’ve been given — like opening for Hundred Waters at the late Grand Central — there’s no excuse why you shouldn’t love this group.

Millionyoung (MIA)
MILLIONYOUNG is a pseudonym for South Florida’s Mike Diaz. Mike’s music is a refreshing form of chill wave, with bright synths and dreamy dripping nostalgia inducing backdrops and the occasional guitar. He is multitalented as an artist, producer, and Dj. He released his first EP in 2009 titled “Sunndream” and has since released a few others with his Material EP being his latest album released in 2014. After some extensive touring, he is back home in South Florida and is expected to release new material in 2016.

Human Like Toys (SRQ)
is the project of producer Mauricio H Blanca. After a decade of playing and touring all through the U.S East coast, follows up a 2-year hiatus with a new live show and EP.

Soapbox Soliloquy And The Nimbus Initiative
(St. Petersburg, FL)
“Soapbox Soliloquy sounds like what you might find in the tape deck of an Old Ford Galaxy, a psyched-out lovechild of Loretta Lynn and Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe (with all the work ethic, but minus the drama). Deja’s vocals are a siren’s song, neither breathy nor contrived, but earthy and mesmerizing. Combined with her multi-instrumental skills on guitar, bass, drums and percussion, the result is distinctly Deja.”

Cassolette (Sarasota, FL)
Cassolette is a 5 (sometimes 6) piece jangly indie-pop band from Sarasota (and Gainesville) Florida, with a love of 90’s Britpop, unabashedly catchy hooks, fuzzy guitar solos and occasionally awkward performances. Featuring Jesse Coleman on guitar and vocals, his wife Ciera singing and playing keyboards, Darren Ankersmit on guitar and vocals, John Ewing on bass and Todd Weissfeld on drums, the band is returning to the scene exiting a brief hiatus. Three years after a successfully funded Kickstarter tour – which culminated in performing at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for the NYC Popfest – Cassolette is back with new songs, new energy, and a renewed love for creating sugary sweet indie-pop tunes you can pogo to.

Art in the Courtyard at Ringling Underground:
Ringling Underground event and artist liaison Sarah Viviana Valdez presents: Products of ‘The Zone,’ a collection of five artworks by artists who utilize the power of the machine to process images with a synthetic treatment. ‘The Zone’ references a philosophy forwarded by filmmaker Chris Marker, claiming that the use of treated images allows for the depiction of things that do not exist in history, redefining a new illusion of the past. Nina Hartmann’s four large prints enact a true photocopy texture even though the images are effectively distorted from their original source using a cropping technique that zooms into an area of the image. Almost ceasing to exist as a shadow-like figure is David Vassalotti in Ghost Town, a silent video manipulated with color-saturation and sepia treatments depicting the plausible reality of a simultaneously cluttered and abandoned world. A violent servitude can be detected in the enhanced digital collages by Nic Hamersly: Please don’t look at me I’m desperate and Gacy in love, classical sculptures arranged with an ironic testimony. Also included is a rose in a glass box surrounded by chains elevated to an emotional appeal in between Nic’s collages. An honest image of a rose slayed by the reality of such a ‘masterful skill’ – to be perfect is painful and unrealistic. A portal for reflective consciousness is presented with a projection mapped to a door frame for Wet Myriads I, the first in a video series by Andrea Williams. A transit character is observed drifting in a ’post-industrial interior.’ The ephemerality discussed in this collection of works passes through a filter of memories, attempting to sort things out in order to be properly understood. Extending from their predecessors who worked outside the hierarchies of film and print industries is a group creating a realm outside of space and time, products of the ‘The Zone’.
