July Creative Salon

Sarasota Underground invites you to attend

Our second monthly Creative Salon

Featuring:

Music by Kristopher James –

From Creative Loafing Tampa

“Touring folk/soul songwriter, calls Florida home. ‘Who is a kindred musical spirit to artists like Gavin DeGraw and Amos Lee, has managed to graduate from the realm of ‘blue eyed’ anything. His guitar work — deceptively complex while still managing to be easy on the ears — is right in harmony and clean in tone. His vocals are perfectly reigned in to suit his range and his easy gift for melody is unrivaled in the Bay area singer-songwriter space Kristopher James is perhaps the most interesting local musician on the scene’

Creative Presentation by Nick ODonnell

Nick ODonnell is the founder & head designer of his young furniture company, Terraform Design.  Started while in college at FSU, Nick uses a process known as ‘Parametric Design’ to create abstract, geometric, and organic furniture & lighting shapes in 3D space, and manufactures his creations using tools like laser cutting and CNC machining.  He was awarded the “Governor’s Young Entrepreneur Award” this past fall, and has recently spoke at a TEDx conference on the different mindsets that can help anyone with passion for an idea to find ways to see it through.

This modern mixer is intended to showcase local creative talent, present emerging artists, and connect the community creatively.

Each month we’re inviting some of the area’s brightest and most interesting individuals to share their stories, art, and experiences with the community. We’ll start with some music, transition to a couple creative presentations, blend in some bad ass spoken word, and then break back into some mellow music so you can network and interact with Sarasota’s most creative minds.

We’ll update this event listing with speaker details and other event updates, or click the links below to keep up with day to day updates.

RSVP’s are required and donations are appreciated to help offset event costs. Click below for tickets.

SRQ Rumble

Can you rock the sway?

Join us at the Powel Crosley Mansion for lively debates on issues that some consider “too hot to handle” where our modified Oxford-style debate gives us civil discourse designed to sway through both factual information and rhetorical skill. Attendees are asked their position on the topic of the day before and after the debate–the success of the participants being judged on those they sway from their initial positions. SRQ launched SB2 to bring together our two sister counties with collaborative programming-now, with our Rumbles we will inspire a return to respectful disagreement, and admiration of the art of rhetoric and a reminder that we should always challenge our own preconceptions in the face of overwhelming evidence.

The audience decides who has the winning argument based on which team swayed the most votes.

Motion: School vouchers will harm public education more than they will help.

Tickets are $25 per person.

The “Pop-Up” series is an initiative designed to offer area-based high school and college students the opportunity to take their art to a higher level. This program came into fruition as a response to young artists who reached out to Art Center Sarasota for exhibition opportunities. Our exhibition staff works with them to develop their projects and give them exhibit space and an audience. For many, it’s the first time they’ve worked directly with a professional art space or gallery. This is a real learning experience for them.

Paradise Portraits (Launch Party)

Hey there friends, I have a really special project that I’d like to talk to you about. Most of you know that I am 1/3 of Boyce Avenue, but I’m not sure how many of you know that I also do a lot of the creative design work for our band, Boyce Avenue. This includes album artwork, tour posters, t-shirt designs, etc. Well, now I’m using my art skills to try and raise some support for the homeless community here in Sarasota, FL. I’m calling the project Paradise Portraits. I’m going to be painting a series of oil-based portraits and a portion of the profits is going to go directly toward helping these homeless individuals through a foundation here in town. There are so many special, inspirational people out there who have fallen on hard times and these paintings will help get them back on their feet again. These portraits will take a while to complete, so in the meantime I’ve released a few Paradise Portrait t-shirt designs to help get the project started. Please come hang with us on Saturday April 29 to support this exciting new project. A portion of the profits from these t-shirts will go directly to the heart of the cause. You can also follow along on social media, just search for @TheseQuietSounds or #ParadisePortraits on all of the major social media platforms. Thank you so much for listening, I appreciate your time and I hope to see you on the 29th. – Fabian Manzano

HMF Opening Night – Hope Will Never Be Silent

“HOPE WILL NEVER BE SILENT”
Harvey Milk Festival 2017 Art Show
Opening Reception Thursday, May 11th from 7pm – 10pm
Pienapple Yoga 517 S. Pineapple Avenue, Downtown Sarasota

Harvey Milk Festival’s art exhibit this year, “HOPE WILL NEVER BE SILENT,” will feature both established and young emerging artists that promote LGBTQIA human experiences through their work, which is to be presented as a collective transmedia art exhibit on Thursday, May 1th 2017 in Downtown Sarasota, Florida.

“HOPE WILL NEVER BE SILENT,” is a famous quote by Harvey Milk, our country’s first openly gay politician elected to public office. By presenting artists who support diversity, reject discrimination, and promote equality for our LGBTQIA community, the Festival presents work that promotes everything that Harvey Milk stood for. If we present great art, we present great change to our community.

Dialogue about the future of the Sarasota-Bradenton region has focused on the role young professionals play in our economy, culture, policies, philanthropy and business. Our two SB2 Rumble teams look more closely at attainable housing, job availability, wages, quality of life, noise ordinances, support networks for young professionals and political engagement in debating whether our region has failed to successfully attract, engage and retain Millennials.

The audience decides who has the winning argument based on which team swayed the most votes.
